Hubble (2025)

This work began with two questions:

  1. Can photography record the past?

  2. If we can only experience a very small part of what is within us, what happens to the rest?

'HUBBLE' is an attempt to explore the possibility of the 'unrecorded past' through photography and to develop the 'unexperienced remainder' of our inner selves.

The photographs were taken in Yeongju by installing a dichroic mirror, the same kind used in the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes, and shooting with long exposures of about three hours at dawn, when there is no light. A space telescope records light from distant celestial bodies, light that has already become the past. At this time, depending on the observational objective, it only allows light of a specific wavelength to pass through while reflecting the rest. The dichroic mirror performs exactly this role. It works on the principle of coating glass with multiple ultra-thin layers of metal oxide, which allows certain wavelengths of light to be transmitted while reflecting others like a mirror.

For example, if there are 100 particles of light, 96 will pass through, but 4 will be reflected back.

The problem is that one cannot know which will pass through and which will return.

I was drawn to those four particles of light. They felt like fragments of another past that might exist.

Science deduces a single theory through hypotheses, experiments, and the accumulation and analysis of data.

However, discovering a strange and beautiful phenomenon and tenaciously pursuing its basis might also be a valid scientific methodology.

One might fail, and perhaps most attempts will end in failure, but one might also find a surprising truth on that path that would never have been discovered without setting out in the first place.

Now, we delve deep into the past that could not pass through.
