반짝반짝 (2023)

 

달빛이 강에 닿으려면, 하늘을 가로지르는 차가운 행주대교 덕에 기둥에 바짝 붙어서 똑바로 내려오지 않으면 안된다. 달빛은 버드나무 사이로, 물가를 지켜보는 삵의 머리 위로 쏟아져 내린다. 콘크리트 둑에서 졸고 있는 너구리에게도, 수풀 속에 앉아 코를 하늘로 치켜들고 노래를 시작하려는 고라니의 등 위로, 물살을 가로지르며 헤엄치는 수달에게도 쏟아져 내린다.

 

행주대교 남단에는 올림픽 도로, 행주대교, 인천 수도권 매립지 방면 도로, 공항로가 만나는 클로버형 인터체인지가 형성되어 있다.  자동차의 회전반경을 맞추기 위한 램프 구간 내부에는 원형의 시설녹지가 자리 잡는다. 이곳에는 작은 숲이 있다. 이곳은 차량 소음과 먼지가 심했지만, 사람의 출입이 없고 버드나무가 우거져 도시에 사는 야생동물의 은신처로서 매력적인 장소였다. 이 숲은 부나방을 꼬이게 만드는 가로등처럼 야생동물들을 홀렸다. 하지만 야생동물들이 이곳을 이용하려면 큰 대가를 치러야 한다. 시설녹지를 드나들려면 사방을 둘러싼 도로를 건너야 하기 때문이다. 이곳을 둘러싸고 있는 도로에서는 고라니, 너구리, 수달, 삵의 죽음이 반복해서 관찰되었다. 이 숲은 분명히 매력적인 서식지이지만 이로 인해 오히려 생태 덫이 되어 이 지역 개체군을 빨아들이는 블랙홀 역할을 하고 있었다. 

 

새벽별이 뜨면 나는 이곳으로 향했다. 이곳에는 아카시아가 많았다. 초여름에는 그 냄새로 공기가 청결해진다. 공기를 크게 들이마시면 폐 가장자리가 가볍게 어는 듯했다. 행주대교 아래에서 그 냄새를 맡으며 천천히 강을 걷다 분이를 만났다. 분이는 이곳을 좋아했다. 한강을 향해 부채꼴로 펼쳐진 콘크리트 둑을 올라가면 벚나무가 있었고 그것에 조명을 비추듯 가로등이 서 있었다. 봄이 되면 가로등 곁의 벚나무가 가장 먼저 개화했다. 꽃이 질 무렵의 밤엔 떨어지는 꽃잎들이 은백색으로 빛났다. 분이의 집에서는 그 광경이 다 보였다. 분이는 낮 동안 이곳에 머물다가 해가 지면 올림픽대교를 건너 강서습지에서 먹이 활동을 하고 새벽녘 올림픽 대로를 건너 시설녹지로 돌아오는 일상을 보냈다. 로드킬로 많은 동물의 주검이 있는 올림픽대로를 분이는 거침없이 건너다녔다. 

 

분이는 친절했다. 사람의 동작 언어를 잘 이해하고 있는 것 같았다. 분이와 같이 사진을 찍을 때마다 친밀감을 느낄 수 있다는 것이 즐거웠다. 사진 찍을 때 가만히 있어야 한다는 걸 알려주지 않아도 과거가 될 만반의 자세를 하고 정확하게 멈췄다. 빛이 충분하지 않은 곳에선 이따금 플래시가 터졌다. 사진은 우리의 현재를 오렸다. 내가 불빛을 터트리면 풍경이 하얗게 날아갔다. 어느 때는 너무 흐릿해 금방이라도 사라질 것 같이 남겨졌다. 그리고 그렇게 오려진 순간들은 내 가슴 어딘가를 찌르듯 건드렸다. 행주대교와 강서습지를 오가던 분이의 평범한 일상은 오래가지 못했다. 한강과 아라뱃길을 유람선으로 잇는 이른바 그레이트 한강 프로젝트가 시작되었기 때문이다. 행주대교 아래의 조용하던 숲은 일순간 뒤집어졌다. 공사 장비가 들어오고 강바닥을 파내는 공사가 시작되자 검은 흙이 작은 숲을 뒤엎었다. 단 며칠 만에 숲은 사라졌다. 그리고 분이도 사라졌다.

 

올해의 여름은 다른 해보다 무더웠다. 여름밤 강을 걷다 보면 유난히 서늘한 기운이 있는 곳이 있다. 그곳에는 더운 공기, 찬 공기가 섞여 있다. 분이를 만나기 위해 2년 동안, 이 숲을 다니며 공기의 변화를 느꼈다. 반쯤 잠기고 반쯤 드러난 생과 죽음이 서로 용해되는 섬세하고 역동적인 이 곳을 온몸을 다해 좋아했다. 그들의 삶에 조금 다가가려 했지만 역시나 알아낸 것보다 모르는 것이 많았다

 

9월이 되자 검은 흙으로 뒤덮인 벌판 가득 풀이 자랐다. 그 속에 분이처럼 앉아 보았다. 분이가 자칫 나를 알아보지 못하고 지나갈지 몰랐다. 다시 서서 지평선을 바라보았다. 바람이 불 때마다 벌판이 소소하게 흔들렸다. 풍성하게 자란 풀과 풀이 서로 닿아 소리를 내고 바람 방향으로 마른 물결이 번졌다. 분이는 어느 방향에서 올까. 조금씩 방향을 바꿔가며 서서 지평선을 바라보았다. 모든 것이 사라져 가는 이때, 어둠을 수평선으로 나누는 반짝반짝한 불빛 같은 것, 저기 그게 있다는 지표 같은 것이, 그 아름다운 것이 필요했다. 어쩌면 우리에게 필요한 것은 기록이 아니라 존재에 대한 감탄일지 모른다.

Twinkle (2023)

If the moonlight wants to reach the river, it has to come straight down, hugging the pillars of Haengju Bridge because the bridge cuts across the sky. The moonlight pours between willow trees and onto the head of a wildcat watching the water’s edge. It also pours down onto a raccoon drowsing on the concrete bank, onto the back of a water deer that is about to sing with its nose lifted heavenward, and an otter swimming upstream.

 

At the southern end of Haengju Bridge, a clover-shaped interchange is formed where the roads to Olympic Expressway, Haengju Bridge, Incheon landfill site, and Gimpo Airport Road meet. There is a circular green area inside the ramp where cars are turning. There is a forest here. Despite the constant noise of traffic and dust, it was an attractive place as a hideout for wild animals inhabiting the city because there were no people coming and going and the willow trees were thick. This forest captivated wild animals like a street lamp swarmed by moths. However, if wild animals want to use this site, they have to pay a big price. They have to cross the roads surrounding it on all sides to enter and exit the small forest. The deaths of water deer, raccoons, otters, and leopard cats were repeatedly witnessed on the roads surrounding this site. Although this forest is obviously an attractive habitat, it has become an ecological trap, acting as a black hole sucking up the local animal population.

 

When the Morning Star was up, I headed for this place. There were a lot of acacias there. In early summer, the air becomes clean with this scent. Taking a deep breath, my lungs felt the freezing air. While strolling along the river under Haengju Bridge, I came across Buni. Buni liked this place. Going up the concrete embankment that spreads out in a fan shape toward the Han River, there was a cherry tree under the light of a street lamp. In spring the cherry tree next to the street lamp was the first to bloom. At night, when the flowers were about to fall, the falling petals glowed silver-white. The whole view was visible from Buni’s house. Buni stayed here in the daytime and spent his daily life crossing the Olympic Bridge at sunset, foraging in the Gangseo Wetland, and crossing Olympic Boulevard at dawn to return to this green zone. Buni used to cross Olympic Boulevard without hesitation where there were many carcasses of animals killed on the road.

 

Buni was kind. Buni seemed to have a good understanding of human movement language. It was a pleasure to feel a sense of intimacy when I took a picture with Buni. I never had to instruct him to stay still; he seemed to intuitively understand the moment and would pause perfectly for the shot. Sometimes, I would take a photo with the camera flash in places where the light was insufficient. In those moments, photography seemed to slice through our present. The landscape would transform into a bright white, and the resulting image would be so blurry. These moments, captured in this manner, had a profound impact on me as if they were piercing directly into my heart. Buni’s ordinary daily life of coming and going between Haengju Bridge and Gangseo Wetland did not last long due to the construction of the so-called Great Han River Project which connects the Han River and the Gyeongin Ara Waterway with a cruise ship. The quiet forest under the Haengju Bridge was soon destroyed. As construction equipment arrived and the work of dredging the river bottom began, the small forest was covered with black soil and dirt. The forest died away in just a few days, and Buni also disappeared.

 

This year's summer was hotter than other years. While walking along the river on a summer night, we found an unusually cool place. Hot and cold air seemed to mix there. For two years, I walked around this forest looking for Buni and felt some change in the air. I loved this delicate and dynamic place with all my being where life and death are fused together in a half-submerged and half-exposed state. I tried to get a little closer to their lives, yet I realized that there was still so much I didn't comprehend compared to what I had uncovered.

 

By September, grass had grown over the field that had been covered with black soil and dirt. I sat there like Buni. I didn't know if Buni might pass by without noticing me. I stood again and looked over the horizon. Whenever the wind blew, the grass quivered slightly. The blades of grass brushed against each other, creating a gentle rustling sound, while dried waves rippled in the direction of the wind. Which direction will Buni come from? I stood up and slowly scanned the horizon. At this time when everything seemed to be fading away, I yearned for something beautiful, like a sparkling light piercing through the darkness on the horizon or serving as a reassuring beacon of existence. Perhaps, what we need is not records, but admiration for existence.
